The final step for this last project was for students to design a studio space for a specific profession including: an artist, a poet, a dancer, and a sculptor. Each student was required to design a studio space for one of these four clients. Students produced drawings explaining the interior, as well as 3-D models to explain the exterior.
This is the first step of the students鈥 final project. Students went on a tour of the Downtown Cotton District and practiced site documentation. Students were given a specific site to document and then return to Giles to create a physical model.
Students were challenged to make a cardboard lounge/table device that supported at least one person from the team as well as perform one other task determined by the group. Students presented and tested the chairs later that night in front of the students and counselors.
Each counselor gave their group a different drawing exercise from their experience in architecture school. Some students explored blind contour drawing, while others worked on their sketching techniques around MSU鈥檚 campus.
Students worked together in teams to design and construct a life-size enclosure on a pre-selected site. They had limited resources including: bamboo, muslin cloth, and string. They were required to make a space and structure that provided shelter for their team, and related and responded to their site.
Following the drawing workshop, the students then drew different locations inside Giles Hall. They were to focus on the aspect of perspective drawings to capture a 3-dimensional space in a 2-dimensional drawing, and use detail drawings to focus closely on how things are built/constructed.
Students were challenged to use one single piece of paper folded to hold up as many bricks as possible. Each group was given 20 minutes to design and test their first design, then were given an opportunity to enhance and retest their design.
This was the first individual assignment given to students. Each student began to think about capturing and defining space. Each student was also given a 鈥渒it of parts鈥 and asked to make a model that had both defined enclosed and defined open spaces.
