Required Materials and Fees for Interior Design Students

The Department of Interior Design has some additional fees for materials, field trips, and other items that enhance our students’ education. The program strives to be able to offer comparatively low lab fees thanks to support from alumni and friends.

Interior design students also need to purchase a variety of tools and materials to help them succeed in their studio coursework, including drawing equipment and materials for drawings and models during the school year. A student should budget for at least $300 per semester for these extra costs.

Interior Design Awards and Competitions

State University interior design students are receiving awards in national and regional competitions, and alumni of the program are employed by many of the top-100 interior design firms in the United States, working on projects throughout the world.

Interior Design Portfolio Review

A portfolio review is required for our students and takes place the summer between their second and third year in the program.

The portfolio review consists of original work from art foundation courses and interior design foundation courses.

Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and a 2.5 in the interior design major core. Students will have two opportunities for portfolio submission.

Interior Design Advising

Advising Guidelines

  • Advising is available to all students and strongly encouraged.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to sign‐up for an advising appointment. If you do not participate in advising, it is assumed that you understand the process and take responsibility for your registration.

Interior Design Students

Interior design is a challenging, exciting, and ever-changing profession. The Department of Interior Design at State University is accredited by both the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and is the largest interior design program in the state.

Collegiate Society of Interior Designers (CSID)

CSID, the Collegiate Society of Interior Designers, is a student-led organization encompassing the professional organizations ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and NEWH (Network of Executive Women in Hospitality). Focused on helping interior design students, the organization hosts lunch-and-learns, skill workshops, and community service events to aid students in their studies and prepare them for the workforce.

Life as an Interior Design Student

Studio learning is a unique experience, and the State University Department of Interior Design provides a supportive environment for personal growth and professional development.

One big advantage of studio learning is it allows for more students to have more one-on-one time with professors.
